WEAK VS STRONG AI


In popular culture and historical contexts, artificial intelligence has often been portrayed as a “neural net” that eventually develops a distinct personality. This emergent being, recognizing human flaws and destructive tendencies, might overthrow us to save the environment.

This concept is referred to as strong AI or general super intelligence.

This perception can largely be attributed to the human tendency to anthropomorphize almost anything. In reality, it’s challenging, if not impossible, for us to truly understand the “mind” of such a being, if it ever comes to exist.

Creating an entity with an emergent persona, self-awareness, or something similar is incredibly difficult. It might even be completely unattainable. What we can achieve are approximations of intelligence, systems that map out probabilities and potential actions to accomplish specific outcomes.

Ironically, this might be more unsettling than the idea of super intelligence, as these systems don’t understand the rationale behind their actions. They simply execute tasks as determined by a series of ones and zeros.

In the not-so-distant past, when the pinnacle of AI development was limited to basic rovers designed for planetary exploration, we became disenchanted with AI and shifted our focus to other, more promising endeavors.

While our attention was elsewhere, weak AI—complex algorithms designed to process vast amounts of data and determine probable outcomes—began to evolve from mere academic curiosity into economically viable solutions.

A prime example is the tech giant Google, which heavily relies on AI to manage its vast data resources. In many ways, Google is a company run by AI, with human intermediaries executing profit-driven algorithms while maintaining the public image of a friendly, nerdy search engine company. But this was just the beginning.

Advancements in natural language processing (NLP) and the generation of coherent, believable content have led to the development of virtual assistants like Alexa, which can now understand and respond to our commands—a feat that was impossible a decade ago.

Computer vision is currently experiencing rapid growth, enabling both concerning applications like global recognition software (think China’s social credit score system) and innovations like self-driving cars and object manipulation using mechanical devices.

As a result, weak AI—these mimetic mechanisms for calculating outcomes—has reached a stage where it can detect patterns in virtually anything, given enough data and proper feature engineering. This capability allows AI to provide insights and suggest courses of action that are nothing short of astonishing.
